  • NAIROBI - MT. KENYA-SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE

Depart after breakfast for Samburu National Reserve through Karatina the biggest open air market in East and central Africa. Proceed to the famed Mount Kenya Safari Club for lunch and stunning views of Mount Kenya. After lunchcontinue to Samburu National Reserve, known for its arid landscape and unique wildlife.Samburu lies on the fringes of the vast and arid desert whose heat-scorched scrublands extend all the way to the Jade-green waters of Lake Turkana and beyond.  During your afternoon game drive, you have the chance to see rare animals you will not see in other parts of the country, normally referred to the “Special 5”, whichincludes Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa Oryx, and the gerenuk, a long-necked antelope that feeds while standing on its hind feet.

Physically dramatic, the 104 sq kilometer landscape of the Reserve features rocky battlements, craggy scarps, dry river beds and fallen boulders rising out of the thorn scrub against a backdrop of the far-distant hills and the great red Table Mountain known as Lololokwi. As for wildlife, Samburu provides one of the few sanctuaries in Kenya for the endangered Grevy’s zebra, the rare beisa oryx and the blue-shanked Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk- whilst large herds of elephant roam the gaunt hills during the day before returning to bathe on the banks of the river in the evening.

  • SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE

After breakfast, enjoy morning and afternoon game drives. In addition to the Samburu “Special 5,” the reserve is home to an abundance of other species. Large numbers of elephant and Nile crocodile can be seen, as well as waterbuck, Kirk’s dik-dik, and Grant’s gazelle. Where there is prey, predators can be found, so lion and leopard are often spotted. The reserve is also a great place for bird watching, with over 350 species recorded. • Drive to Manyara National Park

After breakfast we leave Arusha and drive to Manyara National Park. The road winds through luxurious jungle where groups of a hundred or more baboons can be found along the road. Blue monkeys climb in the acacia tress and the bushbuck antelope gentle grazing in the shade of the forest. In the meantime the impressive silvery-cheeked hornbills have a cacophonic concert in canopy! We stop for a picnic lunch under the Umbrella Thorn before continuing our game drive. This small park has herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe. It is famous of it's lions who lounge in the Umbrella Thorn (not the one we have our picnic under though!). At the end of the day we drive to our accommodation for the next 2 nights, on the green, lush outskirts of the small village of Karatu.

It is also one of the places in Tanzania to see the Big 5; elephant, lion, rhino, leopard and buffalo. More than 550 bird species are found here, and Lake Magadi in the crater is often pink because of the flamingos. We can also see the hippo and buffalo lounging in the mud in Ngoitotitok. It's a special place. We return to our lodge in Karatu for our overnight.

We have a picnic lunch and see the many baobab trees on the hilly plains that Africa is so famous for. The landscape is also dotted with a large number of termite mounds. The Tarangire River crosses through the park giving way to permanent water points - a life line for the wildlife. At the end of the afternoon we drive back to our accommodation in Arusha.
